Frequently asked questions
How many calories does walking burn?+
Brisk walking at 6.5 km/h burns about 5 kcal per minute for a 70 kg adult — roughly 300 kcal per hour. Hiking and uphill walking burn more (~400 kcal/hour).
How many calories does running burn per mile?+
Running burns roughly 100 kcal per mile for a 70 kg adult, regardless of speed. Faster pace burns more per minute but covers the mile in less time, so net kcal per mile stays similar.
What is a MET?+
MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task. 1 MET is the energy cost of sitting quietly. A 7-MET activity burns seven times that. Calories = MET × weight(kg) × hours.
Are these numbers exact?+
No — they're good estimates based on average adults. Individual calorie burn varies with fitness level, mechanics, efficiency, and environment (heat, altitude). Treat the output as ±15% of truth.
Where do the MET values come from?+
The 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al.), the most widely cited reference in exercise physiology. We use the published values directly without modification.
